Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy Program

PHASES 1 & 2 PARTNERS

Mirant Philippines Foundation

Mirant Philippines Foundation (now Team Energy Foundation) committed in 2001 US$20 million under its Project BEACON (Barangay Electrification Assistance for Countryside Development) to bring electricity to more than 1,000 small communities in the Philippines as part of the government’s “O Ilaw” rural electrification program, which was launched to boost economic development and improve living conditions in remote rural communities in the country. This project had been the largest private-sector project of its kind in the country.

Mirant teamed up with the Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Winrock International in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). From 2002 to 2009, Mirant funded energization, using PV battery charging stations (BCS) and solar home systems (SHS), of a total of 308 barangays in Mindanao with nearly US$5 million contribution to the AMORE program.

Mirant Philippines was acquired by Team Energy Corporation, a consortium of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. and Marubeni Corporation, on December 2006.
