Mayor Celso Lobregat commended the Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) and its partners for introducing the so-called photovoltaic systems as alternative sources of electricity.
As the city government under his administration continues to find ways to solve the perennial power crisis, Lobregat said he welcomes private organizations, especially AMORE, “to help us with alternative sources of energy.”
“This photovoltaic technology, which generates electric power by using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into electricity, is an exceptional solution to our present problem,” Lobregat said during the Solar Photovoltaic Business Exposition organized yesterday by AMORE at Paseo del Mar.
He said Zamboanga City and the rest of Mindanao is heavily dependent on hydro plants which generate the biggest bulk of electricity from water at Lake Lanao. “Thus, when water supply is not enough especially during dry season the hydro cannot generate enough electricity and the result is power outages,” he explained.
Lobregat was hopeful AMORE will be able to commercialize the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems for business and households purposes.
“Solar energy is endless. It is about time we make the most of the solar energy,” the chief executive stressed, citing science which states “The sun breathes the earth in a steady, enormous flow of radiant energy that far exceeds what the world requires for electricity fuel.”
More important, Lobregat said, the PV systems operate without producing air, water or solid wastes; hence, environment-friendly.
The exposition runs until today, and the mayor is inviting everyone to visit Paseo and discover the lighting wonders of photovoltaic, derived from the Greek “ph?s” meaning “light,” and “voltaic” meaning “electric” named after the Italian physicist “Volta.”
Present during the expo opening were Ma. Cristina B. Cayetano, deputy Chief of Party, Winrock International-AMORE Program, other AMORE partner-executives, City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. and several other guests.
AMORE has been operating in Mindanao since 2002. It works with rural communities using access to energy as platform for community development.
Aside from Winrock International, a US-based non-profit organization, AMORE’s partners include the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Energy, Mirant Philippines Foundation, Sunpower Corporation, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
