WHAT WE'VE DONE

Accomplishments (as of March 2006)

 

6,850 households, 143 community centers and 319 streets in 227 barangays in Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Sulu, Maguindanao, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga City, Sultan Kudarat, and Davao electrified with renewable energy (RE) systems (224 barangays with photovoltaic systems and three with microhydro power)

273 Barangay Renewable Energy and Community Development Associations (BRECDAs) organized and trained to ope-rate and maintain their RE systems and expand their development

PhP11.1 million O&M Funds raised bythe BRECDAs to operate and maintain their RE systems and expand their development

14 BRECDA Federations established for sharing of skills, resources, best practices and lessons learned; conflict resolution; and wider networking with development partners

One BRECDA Regional Women’s Council formed to empower women to fully support their BRECDAs

Several BRECDA youth associations formed to prepare the youth early to lead their BRECDAs and pursue their communal development

Microhydro communities being trained to maintain their watersheds to sustain their microhydro power system’s water supply

64 natural resource management projects implemented to increase economic opportunities and quality of life of rural populations

Four potable water systems constructed (PWS), one PWS and two rainwater catchment systems rehabilitated, and 24 water disinfection

71 schools electrified to power distance education facilities and one computer-based child learning facility 

One computer center established

Two community theaters established

44 BRECDA-managed public calling offices established

Impact on energized communities (from interviews with beneficiaries):

  • Extended time for studying and livelihood activities.
  • Decline in cases of theft.
  • Increased confidence, skills and drive to communally pursue own development and solicit the support of other development partners.
  • Empowerment of women and the youth to participate in community development.
  • BRECDA members who used to evacuate from their communities that were battle zones between Moro separatist/secessionist and government military groups are building BRECDA offices that  manifest an enhanced sense of permanence
