BRECDA members share with the guests how their lives have changed since electricity from solar home systems has lit up their homes beginning in December of 2006.
Treading through muddy and slippery ground soaked by the heavy downpour, US Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Department of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes visited Brgy. Langilan in San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur on May 29, 2008, to see how the solar power-energized community is holding up amidst soaring fuel prices.
“We are grateful we no longer spend for kerosene,” says the AMORE-organized Community Association Secretary, Lilibeth Sian.
In December 2006, thirty households were installed with 50-watt peak solar home systems by the Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) Program. Another thirty have expressed interest to procure solar home systems at a government-subsidized rate. And this they conveyed to no less than Energy Sec. Angelo Reyes in a dialogue between Ambassador Kenney, Sec. Reyes, Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Aurora Cerilles, AMORE Chief of Party Tetchi Capellan, and the members of the Langilan Renewable Energy and Community Development Association, during the visit.
Capping the visit was a ceremonial turnover of the AMORE-energized 31 villages in Zamboanga del Sur to the provincial government.
AMORE is a rural electrification project that energizes off-grid households and communities by the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and microhydro. To date, it has energized over 12,000 households in over 400 barangays in Mindanao.
