No more coughing
The people of Barangay Bakkud in Siasi, Sulu have grown accustomed to the pungent smell of smoke when using their kerosene lamps to light up their houses at night. They were fully aware of kerosene’s harmful effects to one’s health because a child of one of their neighbors already developed asthma, and which is aggravated by inhaling smoke night after night. They were without a choice, however, and they knew they have to live with it.
Over the years, the rising cost of kerosene has significantly decreased their use of kerosene lamps. They were also worried that the lamps’ prolonged use will make their children sick, who use them for studying despite its dim light and smoke, so they put out their lamps by 8:30 in the evening.
When AMORE was introduced to their village, the residents knew that they now have a chance to say goodbye to the kerosene lamps. The father of the asthmatic child was one of the first who signed up to become a member of the Barangay Renewable Energy and Community Development Association (BRECDA) in the village because he knew that the clean renewable energy-powered lights of AMORE will benefit his child the most.
The residents now use the lights way into the night, sometimes even up to 2 in the morning, especially when their livelihood requires them to put in extra hours of work. Their children can study as many books as they want and for as long they need to. And most importantly, they feel healthier without the kerosene smoke around them and their children. |
